DRAG......... A collaboration with another art form. A connection with another being......another artist......creating another being.
This is not just another fella in a dress. This is passion and drive and excitement. Fake is creative…. & painstaking. And when the facade is complete, It’s performance.
Drag, like Street Art, continues to emerge and has established itself firmly in the public consciousness. This leaves it open to overexposure & commercialism. It’s important to remember the art form through the hype.
These portraits are a collaboration with other artists……. Artists that are flamboyant, exaggerated and mesmerising as they portray another self. Their alter ego is their creative instrument.
In order to understand, I was allowed to observe the rigorous process of transformation. Four hours of impeccable make up application precedes the donning of corsetry, wigs and costumes and in doing so the new identity is gradually revealed, in all its glamorous glory.
So why paint Drag? Throughout history Kings and Queens have had their portraits painted. These Kings and Queens are the royalty of our time and this collaboration is an attempt to document them with grace, grandeur, intimacy & candour.
